Northern Rhône Royalty: August Clape

DO01010481-scaled

Firstly, we would like to say that it’s not easy during these trying times to bring in unicorn wines like these, i.e. wines that are rare and demand high prices. However, such wines are usually offered only once each year and sometimes not at all. This in fact the first time we have been offered the Clape wines, and even though the pricing is stressful (for both us and you) we just had to make it happen. There are a handful of producers in the Cornas appellation of the Northern Rhone that are known for simply superlative Syrah. This is Syrah that will age for 20 or 30 years and transform into something else all together — smoky, earthy deliciousness. August Clape was the first vigneron in Cornas to bottle his own wine and really paved the way for others. Today, his son, Pierre-Marie, and grandson, Olivier, carry on the family legacy. This is tough land to work — steep granite slopes — with vines planted on narrow terraces. This is most certainly a labor of love. We are honored to have a few bottles of their Cornas and their Cotes-du-Rhone, which is in fact 100% Syrah (from neighboring appellations.)  Email [email protected] to reserve yours if you are in the mood for a decadent splurge!
